Greg Thompson

Gregory Robert Thompson, 68, of Robbinsville, NJ, passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2024, at the University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was a long-time Maple Shade, NJ resident before moving to Robbinsville in 1987.

Second to being a loving husband and father, Gregory Thompson was an accomplished academic. Greg graduated as Valedictorian from Maple Shade High School in 1974. During high school he played Varsity Soccer, was a member of Shop Club, and was President of the National Honor Society. Following high school, Greg went to Rutgers University on a full academic scholarship, becoming the first in his family to attend college. As an undergrad, he received his B.A. while majoring in Geology. The recipient of a graduate research grant from the Rutgers College of Engineering, Greg went on to receive his Masters degree in Science, with a major in Ceramic Science and Engineering. While at Rutgers he was also Vice President of Rho Sigma Tau (Squamish) fraternity, a member of the Rutgers Geology Club, a member of Keramos (the National Professional Ceramic Engineering fraternity), and an instructor of Mineralogy and Minerals Engineering.

After graduating, Greg accepted a job with American Standard, where he worked tirelessly for 35 years. He began at its Jakarta, Indonesia plant where he met the love of his life, Lilies. He would then go on to move to the company’s Trenton plant and eventually retired while at its Piscataway offices in 2015.

A family man to the end, Greg had been many things to many people. He was “Hun”, “Dad”, “Pop-Pop”, “Hodge”, and “Coach.” Greg volunteered his time as a youth soccer and baseball coach when his children were young. He helped found the R.S.A. (Robbinsville Soccer Association), coached R.S.A. recreational & travel soccer, and CJYSA (Central Jersey Youth Soccer Association) league select teams.

Greg traveled all over the world, mostly for business and sometimes for leisure. However his favorite way to travel was loading up the minivan with his family and taking summer road trips up and down the East Coast. He was an accomplished bowler in his youth and also loved Bruce Springsteen, The Beach Boys, DIY projects around the house, and golf.

About 10 years ago, Greg developed a rare liver disease, NRH (Nodular Regenerative Hypertension). In 2019 he was blessed with an organ transplant from UPenn Hospital which afforded his family more cherished time with him. He was a fighter until the end and there was never a moment that he didn’t fully embody his high school yearbook photo’s caption: “Capable. Dependable.”

Predeceased by his parents, Robert and Mary Thompson, he is survived by his wife of nearly 40 years, Lilies Thompson; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Martha Thompson; daughter and son-in-law, Lauren and Brian Snell; daughter, Melissa Thompson; three grandsons, Llewyn and Jude Thompson and Sebastian Snell; and his french bulldog, LeBeau.

A Mass of Catholic Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at 10:00 A.M. at St. Gregory the Great Church, 4620 Nottingham Way, Hamilton Square, NJ 08690.

Burial will follow at Princeton Memorial Park, Robbinsville, NJ.
