TRIAL IN DRIVING DEATH
A Brookhaven, Delaware County, man has been ordered to stand trial for the drag-racing drunken-driving death of a New Jersey pedestrian in South Philadelphia on Oct. 27.
After a preliminary hearing yesterday before Municipal Judge William J. Brady, John Sykes, 25, was allowed to remain free on bail on charges that include murder and homicide by vehicle while drunk.
Sykes, Assistant District Attorney Hugh Colihan said, was drag-racing south on Broad Street, crashed into another car at Wolf Street, and drove up on the sidewalk. Nicholas Amato, 24, of Maple Shade, N.J., who was walking toward his parked car from a convenience store, was struck and killed.
After police nabbed him, Sykes blurted, "First of all, I was not drag- racing. I was speeding," Colihan said.
