2007 Media Releases:

May 15, 2007

Acting Camden County Prosecutor Joshua M. Ottenberg and Cherry Hill Police Chief Charlie Jones reported
today that a 50-year-old man was killed last night in a collision with a vehicle operated by an alleged
drunk driver who fled the scene and was apprehended later by police in Cherry Hill, N.J.

The defendant, Efrain Cardona, 35, of the Barclay Tower apartments on Route 70, is charged with Eluding Police and Driving While Intoxicated. Additional charges, including homicide, are possible. The investigation is continuing by the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office and Cherry Hill Police.

The victim, Robert L. Young, 50, of Maple Shade, N.J., died shortly after 12:30 a.m. today at Cooper University Hospital in Camden.

Investigation indicates:

The victim was driving a Saturn Ion westbound on Route 70 near Massachusetts Avenue at approximately 11:30 p.m. last night, Monday, May 14, 2007. Cardona was also driving westbound in a Nissan Maxima and approached Robert Young’s vehicle from behind. Both vehicles were in the right lane.

It is alleged that:

Cardona’s car struck Young’s car in the rear, causing Young’s car to rotate and travel off the road. Young’s car then collided with a tree on the property of Queen of Heaven Church on Route 70. Robert Young suffered multiple injuries and was rushed to Cooper, where he died a short time later.

After the impact, Cardona’s vehicle traveled across the median strip and came to rest in the eastbound lanes of Route 70 in front of Erlton Fire Co. Cardona re-started the vehicle and proceeded eastbound on 70. He then made an illegal U-turn at the Ellisburg intersection and proceeded westbound on 70 again.

Within minutes, a Cherry Hill Police patrol officer observed the suspect vehicle heading westbound on Route 70 near Cooper Landing Road. The officer attempted a car stop.

It is further alleged that Cardona accelerated away from the officer, turned right onto Fulton Street and left onto Wynwood before stopping at the traffic light at Haddonfield Road, at which time he surrendered. It is further alleged that Cardona was legally intoxicated.

Cardona is an employee of J&J Snack Foods in Pennsauken. Young worked at ShopRite.

All persons charged with criminal offenses are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
